I had the pleasure of attending the IPSR-International 2023 Spring meeting hosted by MIT in Massachusetts this month. In-person roadmap meetings are a great opportunity to learn and network with peers from across the ecosystem, and this year was the first time Quantifi Photonics attended.

The Integrated Photonics Systems Roadmap-International (IPSR-I) is a network of industrial, research and development partners that are working to define the future of Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) technology and system-level requirements. The aim of the IPSR-I is to help scale integrated photonics solutions by aligning all parts of the ecosystem around an agreed technology roadmap driven by market need.

A focus of this year’s meeting was on industry sustainability from a holistic perspective. This involved long-term planning that accounts for the very real technological challenges and requirements, while also  planning to develop and sustain the required workforce and making sustainability a critical factor.

The IPSR-I event was very enlightening, bringing together leading minds from industry and academia and leaving me with a profoundly positive outlook for the adoption and implementation of new integrated photonics technologies in the coming years.

Scaling to high-volume manufacturing in a cohesive manner to support adoption of new technologies remains a critical challenge and cannot be solved by any organization working in isolation.

There are 6 key organizations driving the IPSR and they play an important role fostering collaboration and forward-planning for the wider electronic-photonic manufacturing and supply chain ecosystem.

I very much look forward to working with new connections and peers from these future-defining organizations.
